But this year, record breaking gas prices have cast a shadow over these plans, making it a holiday season unlike any other. The national average for regular gasoline has reached $4.

14 per gallon, a 97 cent increase from last year's Labor Day average and 32 cents above the previous record set in 2012. Diesel prices have also broken through the $5 barrier, reaching an all time high of $5.
