A recent study funded by Cancer Research UK has shed light on a dark side of the UK’s favorite cuppas: their potential link to an increased risk of oesophageal cancer. While the findings are not entirely surprising, given previous research from South America, they serve as a stark reminder of Western habits.
The study analyzed data from over 980,000 adults in the UK, combining two large datasets to produce the most comprehensive examination of this issue to date. The results show that participants who consumed very hot drinks faced a significantly higher risk of oesophageal cancer compared to those who preferred their beverages at a moderate temperature.
International guidelines deem beverages above 65°C as “probably carcinogenic.” In the UK, the average drinking temperature is estimated to be around 60°C. Experts are now urging people to let their cuppas cool down before taking a sip.
This highlights the ongoing battle between our love of hot drinks and our health. While the risk of oesophageal cancer remains relatively low in the UK, this study serves as a timely reminder that even seemingly innocuous habits can have unforeseen consequences.

While this study confirms what many audio engineers already know - that scalding hot beverages can damage our mucous membranes and vocal cords - it's surprising more people aren't aware of the risk to their oesophagi.
