The recent glacial mountain collapse that swept through parts of Nepal and Tibet, claiming over 1,400 lives and leaving thousands missing, was no ordinary disaster. It highlighted the devastating consequences of climate change in one of the most fragile ecosystems on the planet.

A report by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group assessed that the disaster was not caused by a single extreme weather event but rather a “compound crisis” shaped by long-term warming, glacier retreat, permafrost thaw, and geological instability. This is no isolated incident; it’s a symptom of a far more insidious problem.

The Himalayas are often referred to as the “Third Pole,” supporting some of the world’s most critical water sources. Beneath their majestic peaks lies a ticking time bomb – one primed by decades of relentless warming. As Walter Immerzeel, report co-author and mountain hydrologist at Utrecht University, notes, the region is undergoing “fundamental, irreversible shifts” with glacier retreat and permafrost degradation undermining mountain stability.

Nepal, a country often overlooked in global discussions about climate change, is a stark example of how vulnerable communities are being pushed to the brink. With a population of 30 million people, Nepal contributes a fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions compared to industrialized nations. Yet it’s already suffering the consequences – from increased meltwater and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) to landslides and rockfall.

The World Weather Attribution report highlights a disturbing pattern: this July and August were the warmest months locally recorded, with temperatures about 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Heavy snowfall in late 2025 contributed to increased meltwater before the collapse. This is part of a larger trend that demands attention.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah will likely face pressing questions about Nepal’s reconstruction efforts and the limits of adaptation in the face of climate change when he addresses the United Nations General Assembly next week. The estimated $4.78 billion reconstruction bill is just the tip of the iceberg – a cost that pales in comparison to the human toll.

Friederike Otto, professor of climate science at Imperial College London, notes: “There is no doubt that climate change is one of the drivers, and therefore obviously it needs to be discussed in the context of loss and damage.” The international community must take heed – not just for Nepal’s sake but also for our own. We’re witnessing a global climate crisis that demands collective action.
